To me, By Subairi is about Agus. He is the only stylist I know at there, and I don’t mind it that way.
I will have to rewrite this review later to do Agus full justice, but for now, let’s say that it deeply pains me that I have bought a $20 clipper that I use on my hair when Agus is busy or away, or I am. It is a melancholic feeling, awkwardly and sloppily cutting my own hair, looking at myself in the mirror, clipper in hand, knowing that Agus could be doing it much more skillfully and with much more ease while at the same time being a friend, for a short period of time.
I have sent all my friends to Agus, and they are all pleased and delighted at the prospect of going to Agus, and happy after they leave him with a fresh cut.
Agus speaks some Dutch because he is Indonesian (makes sense, right?). I am Dutch, I like speaking Dutch with non-Dutch people outside the Netherlands, and I like Indonesians (and their food) . He has a small scooter he uses to scoot around DC.
It’s a steal for the price ($35 + tip), and it wouldn’t surprise me if the price of Agus’s services outpaces inflation.
All praise due to Agus.

I love Subari. I have had bright violet red hair for 10 years and have just wanted to return to my natural ash blond. I have spent the last year and half with my old hair salon trying to remove the red without having half roots half red hair and been unsuccessful. Subari turned out to be the answer. My hair is in more than decent shape and it looks fantastic…shiny, soft….amazing. The cut was incredible and he was quick, kind and understanding. Love him. I will be back!

Agus is the best hairstylist I have ever been to. Period. I had been in DC for about three years before my friend recommended I try him, and had been to a number of salons in that time. I had cuts that were good, but way overpriced, and cuts that were okay (not spectacular) but at least didn’t eat up my whole paycheck. I was looking for a salon that was reasonably priced and would make me look fabulous. I found that when I visited Agus.
I have thin light brown hair – it’s not in bad shape, but it was just kind of blah. Agus picked out the perfect highlight color for my skin tone & hair color (I went in and told him “blond highlights,” he picked out “honey golden glow”) and then gave me a fabulous layered cut that gives me volume and a bit of a wave. I walked out of there feeling like a million bucks, and I’m still glowing three weeks later.

Urban Escape is a fabulous salon that does a solid job. Now I am going to By Subairi. I have been going to Susan for about five years now for highlights and a haircut and she always does a phenomal job and charges a fair price. She does exactly what I want and always knows what to suggest that will make my hair look natural and healthy. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 stars is because the assistants/shampoo staff are not really on the ball. The stylists are all great though. Highly recommended!
